Welcome to our class web site!

Weekly Update: November 13, 2018

Field Trip:  We are going on a field trip to San Ramon Valley High School to see a play titled "Tuff Fluff: The Case of Duckie's Missing Brain?"  on Friday, Nov. 29th.  Permission slips were sent home last week and are due by Friday, November 16th.

Reflex Math & Dreambox: We are very lucky to have two great online math programs for students to practice their math skills at home with. Reflex Math builds math fact fluency in addition and subtraction.  Therefore, daily use of this program is most beneficial. Unfortunately, in class we are not always able to use Reflex everyday. We know limits on screen time are important, so if  your family is trying decide which program to focus on and spend more time on at home, we suggest focusing on Reflex.  We currently use Dreambox in the classroom for about 15 minutes per day, so students are getting the recommended practice in this program daily.

Book Bags: Since we are beginning our Nonfiction Unit in Reader's Workshop, the students now will have two nonfiction books included in their Book Bag.  Many of the Nonfiction books may not be their "Just Right" level, so we are suggesting that they read their on level books during their twenty minutes of nightly reading.  We will be using the Nonfiction books in class during our Reader's Workshop lessons. We have included a "Sight Word List" in your child's Book Bag.  It is great practice to review these words nightly. The sight word practice will help with spelling as well.  Book Bags should be coming home everyday with your student.  These bags go home each day and should be returned back to school the next day.  Please record the book title and the amount of time your child reads each night.  (We are shooting for at least 20 minutes a night!) There is also a signature required at the end of the week. We will be checking the logs and stamping them each week.  Students who have a completed Log each week will receive a SOAR Ticket.  Completed November Reading Logs will be due on Friday, November 30th.

Library:  Our next visit to the library will be on Thursday, Nov. 15th.  Please have your child return their library books by Wednesday, Nov. 14th.

Remind App: Please text the message @gbin1819 to the number 81010 to receive important text reminders from Mrs. Niccolls and Mrs. Indermuehle.

SOAR:  We are SOARing at Greenbrook and in Room 504!  S.O.A.R is Greenbrook's school wide rules and behavior management system. For information please visit the Greenbrook Link:

S = Self-Control

O = Offer Kindness

A = Act Responsibly

R = Respect yourself & Others

"Uh Oh Forms" are given to students for not following our S.O.A.R. school-wide rules. For more information on "Uh-Oh Forms", please see the S.O.A.R. link above. "Eagle Bucks"will be given out during recess times. Teachers on Yard Duty, Noon Duty Volunteers, and any adults out during recess times will be looking for kids who are having Self Control, Offering Kindness, Acting Responsibly, and Respecting themselves and others. We hope the "Eagle Bucks" will be a positive reinforcement of our S.O.A.R. rules and a fun way to encourage kids to make great choices!

The point of this section is to give families an idea about what we're working on this week in the classroom. The hope is that it will also help stimulate the dinner conversation as well.

Reading/Language Arts

Word Work - This week we are learning about Singular & Plural Nouns.  We will also discuss the rules for correct word endings (s, es, ies)

In Reader's Workshop, we will continue our Nonfiction Reading unit, "Becoming Experts". We will discuss that nonfiction readers pay attention to details, ask questions, think about what the book is teaching, and look for and understand key words.

Writer's Workshop

This week in Writer's Workshop we will begin our Nonfiction Writing Unit.  Students will pick topic that they are an "Expert" on and write about that topic.

In the Science Lab with Mr. Pelham......

Chemical Change – Make Butter:  We will discuss how energy is required or released during chemical reactions. Each student will use their muscles to create enough energy to turn milk into butter by shaking a small container like a polaroid picture. We will sample our butter and see what evidence we have that there has been a change.

Social Studies

This week we are reading Molly's Pilgrim and discussing what a "Modern Day" Pilgrim is. Students will create a Lap Board about the story.

This week in Math we will continue Module 4 -  Addition & Subtraction with
in 200 with Word Problems to 100

Snack Recess

Students have snack recesses at 10:10 and 2:00 each day. It is important that they come to school with healthy "NUT FREE" snacks.  We encourage them to be responsible for their snacks and pack a piece of fruit, or consider some protein and water...something to nourish their bodies and brains. Thank you for providing healthy options at home and encouraging their snack selection.
